Whole recipe (2 servings): 360 kcal
- 2 black tea bags (or 2 teaspoons loose black tea)
- 1 cup water
- 1-inch piece fresh ginger, peeled and thinly sliced
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 4 whole cloves
- 2 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 2 cups milk (dairy or unsweetened plant-based)
- 2 shots espresso (about 2 ounces total), or 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup, or to taste
Method
7 steps- In a small saucepan, combine 1 cup water, sliced ginger, cinnamon stick, cloves, cardamom pods, nutmeg, and black pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes to infuse the spices.
- Add the black tea bags, remove from heat, and steep for 3–5 minutes. Do not boil the tea or it may become bitter.
- While the tea steeps, brew 2 shots of espresso (about 2 ounces total) using an espresso machine, or prepare 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee as a substitute. Set aside.
- Strain the tea mixture into a clean saucepan or heatproof pitcher, discarding the spices. Return the strained tea to the saucepan.
- Add the milk and maple syrup to the tea. Warm over medium-low heat until steaming hot but not boiling, whisking occasionally.
- Divide the espresso between two mugs. Pour the warm chai milk mixture over the espresso, dividing evenly.
- Taste and add more maple syrup if desired. Serve immediately.
Recipe notes
Helpful tips
- For a stronger chai flavor, lightly crush the cardamom pods and cloves before simmering.
- If you don't have an espresso machine, use strong brewed coffee or a concentrated coffee shot.
- For a frothier latte, whisk the warm milk mixture vigorously or use a milk frother before pouring.

- Measuring spoons
- Knife and cutting board
Storage
Best enjoyed fresh. Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 2 days and reheated gently, but the spices may intensify.
