  • 825 g pear, drained
  • 0.5 cup pear juice
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 0.5 cup white flour
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar
  • 0.5 cup shredded coconut
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 100 g melted butter

Method

6 steps
  1. Heat the oven to 180°C. Lightly butter a 20 × 20 cm baking dish.
  2. Drain the canned pears, reserving ½ cup (about 120 ml) of the juice. Arrange the pears in the dish and pour over the reserved juice.
  3. In a bowl, combine the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, shredded coconut and ground ginger. Pour in the melted butter and mix until the dry ingredients are evenly moistened and form clumps.
  4. Scatter the crumble mixture evenly over the pears without pressing it down.
  5. Bake for 30–35 minutes, until the topping is golden and the fruit is bubbling around the edges. Rest for a few minutes before serving.
  6. Serve warm or cold with yoghurt, cream, ice cream or custard, if desired.

Recipe notes

Helpful tips

  • Drain the pears well but keep the measured juice; too much liquid can make the topping soggy.
  • Mix the melted butter through the topping thoroughly so there are no dry flour pockets.
  • If the top browns before the fruit bubbles, loosely cover it with foil for the remaining bake.
  • Let the crumble stand briefly after baking because the fruit syrup will be very hot.

Equipment

  • oven
  • baking dish

Storage

Cover and refrigerate leftovers for up to 3 days. Reheat portions in the oven or microwave; the topping is crispest when reheated in the oven.
