- 1 large sweet onion, about 285 g
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 2/3 cup buttermilk
- 2 large eggs
- 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Cooking spray
Method
17 steps- Peel the onion and slice it crosswise into 1/2-inch-thick rounds.
- Separate the onion slices into individual rings.
- Whisk the flour, salt and paprika together in a shallow dish.
- Whisk the buttermilk and eggs together in a medium bowl.
- Stir the panko breadcrumbs and olive oil together in a second shallow dish until evenly combined.
- Coat each onion ring in the flour mixture and shake off the excess.
- Dip the floured ring into the buttermilk and egg mixture.
- Coat the ring in the flour mixture for a second time.
- Dip it back into the buttermilk and egg mixture.
- Coat the ring thoroughly with the panko breadcrumbs.
- Place the coated rings on a baking sheet while finishing the remaining onions.
- Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (175°C), if required by the model.
- Spray the air-fryer basket lightly with cooking spray.
- Working in batches, arrange the rings in a single layer with about 3/4 inch of space between them.
- Spray the tops of the rings lightly with cooking spray.
- Air fry for 12 to 15 minutes, flipping and spraying again halfway through, until crisp and golden.
- Serve immediately with a preferred dipping sauce.
