- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- 1 ¼ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon orange zest
- ½ cup butter, cold and diced
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup buttermilk
- Egg wash
Method
- Preheat the oven.
- Mix the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and orange zest.
- Add the cold, diced butter and rub in until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Beat the egg and add it to the mixture.
- Pour in the buttermilk and gently mix until just combined.
- Shape the dough into rounds and cut into wedges or cut out individual scones.
- Brush the tops with egg wash.
- Bake until golden and cooked through.
