  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 ¼ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon orange zest
  • ½ cup butter, cold and diced
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • Egg wash

Method

8 steps
  1. Preheat the oven.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and orange zest.
  3. Add the cold, diced butter and rub in until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Beat the egg and add it to the mixture.
  5. Pour in the buttermilk and gently mix until just combined.
  6. Shape the dough into rounds and cut into wedges or cut out individual scones.
  7. Brush the tops with egg wash.
  8. Bake until golden and cooked through.
