10 ingredients- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- ⅓ cup granulated sugar
- 1 ¼ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ¾ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon orange zest
- ½ cup butter, cold and diced
- 1 large egg
- ½ cup buttermilk
- Egg wash
Method
10 steps- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt and orange zest in a large bowl.
- Rub the cold diced butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
- Whisk the egg and buttermilk together in a separate bowl.
- Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and mix lightly until the dough just comes together.
- Transfer the dough to the prepared baking sheet and shape it into a 7-inch round approximately 1 inch thick.
- Cut the round into 8 wedges and space them slightly apart.
- Brush only the tops of the scones with egg wash.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes, until risen and golden.
- Transfer the scones to a wire rack to cool slightly before serving.
