Method

  1. Pick a shallow bowl that will be easy to dunk bread into.
  2. Beat together two eggs, 2/3 cup of milk, and a pinch of salt.
  3. Add 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon or ground nutmeg if desired, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract for flavor.
  4. Cut six thick slices of bread.
  5. Dunk each slice in the egg mixture, turning to soak both sides.
  6. Lightly butter a griddle or skillet and heat it over medium-high heat.
  7. Place the soaked bread on the griddle and cook until both sides are golden brown, flipping halfway through.
  8. Serve hot with toppings such as fresh berries, powdered sugar, cinnamon, chocolate chips, or maple syrup.
